Is the Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 Mythos a modern CLK Black Series we were hoping for?

Mercedes-AMG is teasing its second Mythos model, a hardcore CLE-based coupe expected to use a twin-turbo V8 and extreme Black Series-style aero.

Mercedes-AMG might finally be giving enthusiasts what they have been asking for.

The upcoming Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 Mythos has been teased and spotted testing, and even under camouflage it already looks like the spiritual successor to the CLK 63 AMG Black Series. Big wing, wide stance, aggressive aero, four squared-off exhaust tips and the kind of visual attitude AMG coupes used to carry so naturally. More of this, please.

The second Mythos model looks serious

Mercedes-AMG’s new CLE-based model is expected to become the second car in the Mythos series, following the SL-based AMG PureSpeed. The Mythos line is positioned around ultra-exclusive collector models, and early reports suggest this CLE could be far rarer than the PureSpeed, with production potentially limited to just 30 units worldwide.

This is not just a regular CLE 63 with a sportier bumper. It looks like AMG is preparing something much more focused, much more limited and much more dramatic. The prototypes seen testing show a redesigned front bumper with large cooling openings, canards, wider arches, a lower stance and a fixed rear wing. At the back, the rectangular quad exhausts strongly suggest full-fat AMG 63 intent.

A new V8 could be the real headline

The Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 Mythos is rumoured to use a new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with a flat-plane crank, with output expected around 646 PS. Torque figures have not been confirmed yet, so for now we should avoid pretending there is an official Nm number.

If that happens, it would be a huge emotional moment for AMG. The current Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 uses a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with hybrid assistance, producing 449 PS and 560 Nm. Strong numbers, but not the kind of thing that makes people stop scrolling. A V8-powered Mythos version would move the CLE into a completely different emotional space. Especially if that flat-plane crank rumour is true.

Mythos means this will not be for everyone

The potential 30-unit production run also means the CLE 63 Mythos will almost certainly not be a normal enthusiast car.

It will be expensive, difficult to get and probably allocated to collectors before most people ever see it in public. European pricing has not been confirmed, but with the Mythos badge and this level of exclusivity, it will clearly sit far above a regular CLE AMG model.

That is both exciting and slightly frustrating. Because the idea is brilliant. A hardcore V8 CLE with Black Series energy is exactly what AMG needs for its image. But if only 30 people can buy it, it becomes more collector object than true performance icon.

AutoNext Take

The CLE 63 Mythos looks like a car with attitude. It has the right shape, the right stance, the right aero and, if the rumours are correct, the right engine. A twin-turbo flat-plane V8 in an ultra-aggressive CLE coupe sounds far more like AMG than another overcomplicated attempt to make everything quietly efficient.

If this really is limited to around 30 units, it will be more myth than movement. Great for collectors, great for brand image, but frustrating for the wider AMG audience that wants the V8 comeback to be real and accessible.

The new Mercedes-Benz EQS: further ahead, smarter, and more luxurious

There was a time when the Mercedes-Benz EQS felt more like a technological statement than a fully resolved luxury flagship. It was clever. It was slippery. It was spectacularly aerodynamic. But it also felt like a car designed to prove a point. This new EQS feels different.
