Lamborghini turns 63 and that number has become part of the brand’s identity
07/05/2026
Lamborghini is not just celebrating another birthday.
On 7 May 2026, Automobili Lamborghini turns 63, marking more than six decades since Ferruccio Lamborghini founded the company in Sant’Agata Bolognese on 7 May 1963. But with Lamborghini, the number 63 is not simply a date in the archive. It has become part of the brand’s visual language, its collector culture and its way of connecting past, present and future.
Over the weekend of 9 and 10 May, Lamborghini will celebrate the moment at Lamborghini Arena at the Imola circuit, bringing together owners, dealers, guests and enthusiasts from around the world. And honestly, there are few brands that can turn a founding year into an emotional event quite like Lamborghini.
It started with a very clear idea
The Lamborghini story began with one of the most famous acts of automotive defiance. Ferruccio Lamborghini did not want to build a car that simply followed the established rules. He wanted to create something capable of challenging the very best, without copying them and without behaving like everyone else.
On 2 October 1963, Lamborghini fired up its first 3.5-litre V12 on the test bench. That engine would become the foundation for decades of flagship models and one of the most important emotional signatures in the brand’s history. Later that month, on 20 October 1963, the first prototype, the Lamborghini 350 GTV, was shown to the Italian press in Sant’Agata Bolognese while the factory itself was still under construction. Ten days later, the car was presented to the public at the Turin Motor Show.
Why 63 means more than a number
Today, 63 has become one of Lamborghini’s most recognizable codes. It appears in limited editions, special details and collector models, often in ways that are subtle enough for insiders to recognise but meaningful enough to reinforce the brand’s mythology.
The Sián FKP 37, Lamborghini’s first step into hybrid supercar territory, was produced in 63 units. The Aventador SVJ 63 and SVJ 63 Roadster used the number as a marker of exclusivity. In motorsport, the SC63 hybrid prototype carried it into the FIA World Endurance Championship, linking Lamborghini’s founding year to one of the brand’s most ambitious racing projects.
Even beyond cars, the number has appeared in collaborations with other Italian performance names, including Ducati. From the Diavel 1260 Lamborghini to the Panigale V4 Lamborghini Speciale Clienti, 63 has become a shared symbol of Italian engineering, emotion and design intensity. It is rare for a number to become this strongly associated with a brand.
From V12 drama to hybrid performance
This anniversary also arrives at an important moment for Lamborghini. The brand is now deep into its electrified era. Models like the Revuelto and Temerario have changed the technical direction of Sant’Agata, while the SC63 shows Lamborghini’s ambition to carry hybrid performance into endurance racing.
That makes the 63-year milestone more interesting. Because Lamborghini is no longer just looking back at naturally aspirated V12s, wedge-shaped icons and poster cars. It is trying to protect the emotional intensity of those cars while moving into a very different technological future.
That is not easy. Few brands are as dependent on drama as Lamborghini. Sound, proportion, theatre and shock value are not side elements here. They are the product. So the challenge is not simply to become faster or more efficient. The challenge is to remain unmistakably Lamborghini.
AutoNext Take
Lamborghini turning 63 is more than a nice anniversary post. It is a reminder that this brand was born from attitude. Not market research. Not compromise. Not a desire to fit in.
The brand has always been at its best when it feels slightly unreasonable, when it builds cars that do not simply compete on numbers but create an emotional reaction before you even start the engine. The challenge now is to carry that same energy into the hybrid era without becoming too polished or too predictable.
