Some cars define an era. Others are so far ahead of their time that they remain relevant decades later.

At the Werks Reunion, organized by the Porsche Club of America, Canepa unveiled its latest interpretation of the iconic supercar: the Porsche 959 SC finished in striking Rubystone Red. Part of Canepa’s Sport Canepa (SC) program, the project transforms the already legendary 1980s supercar into what the company calls the ultimate Porsche 959 for the 21st century.

The Porsche 959: still one of the most advanced cars ever built

To understand the significance of the Porsche 959 SC, it helps to revisit the original car. When Porsche launched the Porsche 959 in the mid-1980s, it was arguably the most technologically advanced road car in the world. Developed initially for Group B rally homologation, the 959 introduced technologies that would later become standard across the industry.

Among them:

  • advanced all-wheel drive

  • adjustable suspension

  • lightweight composite construction

  • twin-turbocharged flat-six power

With around 450 horsepower, the original 959 was capable of more than 315 km/h, making it the fastest production car of its time. Even today, the 959 is widely considered one of the most important supercars ever built.

Sport Canepa: restoring and reinventing the icon

Canepa’s Sport Canepa (SC) program takes the original 959 and elevates it far beyond a traditional restoration. Each car is completely disassembled and rebuilt while integrating modern technology to improve performance, reliability and usability.

The result is something rare in the collector car world: a classic supercar that drives like a modern one without losing its original character. This one is finished in the unmistakable Porsche color Rubystone Red, perfectly captures that philosophy.

850 horsepower from the legendary flat-six

The biggest transformation lies under the rear deck. Through extensive engineering upgrades, the twin-turbocharged flat-six now produces an astonishing 850 horsepower and 810 Nm of torque. That is nearly double the output of the original car.

Combined with upgraded electronics, revised suspension and modernized drivetrain components, the result is a 959 capable of performance levels that rival contemporary hypercars. The chassis also benefits from newly developed 18-inch hollow-spoke wheels created specifically for the Sport Canepa program.

A bespoke interior to match the bold exterior

If the exterior color already makes a statement, the interior takes the concept even further. This Rubystone Red commission features a bright white leather interior, creating a dramatic contrast with the vivid exterior paint.

Beyond aesthetics, the cabin has also been modernized with updated electronics, improved lighting systems and a contemporary sound system, subtle upgrades designed to enhance usability without compromising the car’s original design language.

A rare modern interpretation of a 1980s icon

Projects like the Porsche 959 SC highlight an interesting trend in the collector car world.

Rather than restoring iconic cars to strict factory specification, specialists such as Canepa are reimagining them for modern driving. The philosophy is similar to the restomod movement but applied with extreme technical precision.

The result is something unique: a historically significant machine that can still deliver a truly modern driving experience.

AutoNext Take

The Porsche 959 has always been a fascinating paradox. It was a technological masterpiece that arrived decades ahead of its time, so advanced that the world around it needed years to catch up. Today, that makes it the perfect candidate for projects like the 959 SC.

It is not just a restoration and not quite a restomod either. Instead, it feels like the car Porsche might have built if the 959 had never stopped evolving. And with 850 horsepower and unmistakable Rubystone Red presence, it proves one thing: some legends never fade, they simply become faster.
