Toyota's last GR Supra leaves Austria for a Paul Walker charity auction

The car's VIN ends in 99999 and it came off the Magna Steyr line in Graz, the Austrian plant that also builds the BMW Z4. It crosses the block at Scottsdale in January.

The last MkV Supra carries VIN 99999 and Akio Toyoda's signature

Toyota North America has donated the final fifth-generation GR Supra to Reach Out Worldwide, the disaster-relief charity Paul Walker founded in 2010. The car is a MkV Final Edition in Phantom Gray with red mirror caps, a carbon fibre rear spoiler, a commemorative VIN ending in 99999 and Akio Toyoda's signature. It sells at Barrett-Jackson's Scottsdale auction in January, with the entire hammer price going to the charity.

Magna Steyr built every MkV Supra in Graz, from March 2019 to March 2026

No MkV Supra was ever built in Japan. Every one came off the Magna Steyr contract line in Graz, Austria, which started Supra assembly in March 2019 and finished it in March 2026. The same line builds the BMW Z4, which shares the Supra's platform and its BMW straight six, and which BMW has been winding down on roughly the same timetable. The car heading to Arizona is therefore an Austrian-built farewell to a Japanese nameplate, and one of the last things that line will have made.

The auction car makes 387 hp, Europe's A90 Final Edition makes 435 hp

The North American MkV Final Edition produces 387 hp and 498 Nm from its turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six, sent through a six-speed manual. Its upgrades are chassis upgrades: stiffer bushings, a revised camber angle, a stronger front anti-roll bar, retuned dampers, larger Brembo brakes and 19-inch matte black wheels. Europe and Japan were given a different send-off. The GR Supra A90 Final Edition, limited to 300 cars worldwide, lifts the same engine from 340 hp to 435 hp and from 500 Nm to 570 Nm with a redesigned intake and a lower-back-pressure catalytic converter, then adds a KW suspension system. The very last Supra built is 48 hp short of the best one.

VIN 20201 sold for $2.1 million at Scottsdale in January 2019

Barrett-Jackson has bookended this car once already. In the same week the MkV was unveiled in Detroit in January 2019, the first global production example, VIN 20201, sold at Scottsdale for $2.1 million, with the full amount going to the American Heart Association and the Bob Woodruff Foundation. That car was finished in matte grey with red mirror caps and matte black wheels. The last one is Phantom Gray with red mirror caps and matte black wheels. Toyota has not called the pairing deliberate, but the specification sheets line up.

Paul Walker's own Supra was an A80, and it sold for $550,000

Reach Out Worldwide was founded in 2010, after Walker joined a relief team responding to the Haiti earthquake and came home convinced that what disaster zones lacked was trained people rather than money. It sends medics, firefighters and construction crews into those zones, and his brother Cody runs it now. Walker died in 2013. The orange 1994 A80 Supra he drove in the first Fast and Furious sold at Barrett-Jackson in Las Vegas in June 2021 for $550,000, a record for the model at auction that still stands. Nameplate and charity have met on the same auction floor before.

Toyota's road-car halo now passes to the GR GT

Toyota has said it will keep developing the Supra through motorsport even with road-car production over, and the GR Supra GT4 carries on in customer racing. The road-car halo moves to the GR GT, the front-engined coupe Toyota has been testing at the Nürburgring. What the company has not done is confirm a sixth Supra, which leaves the nameplate quiet again, as it was between 2002 and 2019.

AutoNext Take

Barrett-Jackson says it is ready to challenge the $2.1 million the first MkV Supra made. It should not expect to, and the reason sits in what that 2019 number actually bought. Nobody outside Toyota had driven the car, no dealer had one, and the winning bidder took delivery of the first example on earth of a nameplate that had been dead for seventeen years. That is a premium on access, not on the machine. VIN 99999 arrives after seven years of production, at the end of the run, in the lower-powered of the two farewell specifications. Charity bidding does float free of market value, as the €40 million paid for the first Ferrari Luce showed in Monterey, so a big number is plausible. Beating $2.1 million is not.

The European reading is different again. The last Supra ever built is an Austrian-assembled car with a BMW engine, going under the hammer in Arizona for an American charity, while Europe's own farewell, capped at 300 cars, is the quicker machine. That is the MkV in one sentence: a Japanese badge on a deliberately international car, which is what purists held against it and also the only reason it got built at all. If you want the best version of this Supra, it was never going to be the one with the commemorative VIN.

Toyota's LFA successor already has a hotter variant chasing a Porsche GT3 RS

Toyota Gazoo Racing's GR GT, described as the spiritual successor to the Lexus LFA, arrives in 2027 as a standard road car and a more aggressive track variant. The standard car pairs a 4.0-liter twin-turbo hybrid V8 with 650 hp, while the hotter version has already been spotted testing at the Nurburgring against a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, before the base model has reached a single customer.

Ayrton Senna's Honda NSX returns to auction at its 2024 asking price

Honda gave Ayrton Senna a red NSX for his stays in Portugal in 1991, and chassis T000233 now heads to RM Sotheby's London sale on 31 October with a £500,000 to £800,000 estimate. The floor is the same figure the car was publicly advertised at in April 2024. Senna's role in creating the NSX is real, but considerably smaller than the legend around it.
