The EX30's charging port becomes a socket, and cars already sold get it too

Volvo has begun pushing a free over-the-air update that turns the EX30's charging port into a power outlet. Connect the adapter and Europe's third best-selling EV of 2024 will run e-bikes, tools, a cool box or a coffee machine at up to 3 kW. The part worth noticing is who gets it: cars already sold, not only the newest ones.

The EX30 hands over 3 kW at 16 amps through its charging port

Vehicle-to-load on the EX30 runs at up to 3 kW and 16 amps, drawn straight from the drive battery. There is no socket in the cabin: power leaves through the same port the car charges on, using an adapter, after which Volvo says almost any electrical device can be plugged in. The function was already listed among the EX30's 2026 model-year changes, but this is the update that actually delivers it, in stages, to new and existing customers at no cost. The same release adds a customisable context bar on the centre screen and a rebuilt settings menu.

Volvo cuts the supply at 20 percent, which still leaves around 51 kWh

The car stops supplying power once the battery drops below 20 percent, so an afternoon of camp-site cooking cannot strand you. On the 69 kWh Extended Range EX30, which holds roughly 64 kWh usable, that floor still leaves about 51 kWh to spend, close to 17 hours at a continuous 3 kW draw. The 51 kWh entry car has proportionally less. Either figure dwarfs what the devices people actually plug in will take: a fridge, a laptop and two e-bike chargers barely register.

3 kW sits under the 3.6 kW a Hyundai Ioniq 5 has given since 2021

Volvo is not setting the benchmark here. Hyundai and Kia have offered vehicle-to-load on their E-GMP cars since 2021 at up to 3.6 kW, and the Ioniq 5 puts a socket under the rear seat as well as an adapter on the charge port, so nothing has to be carried in the boot. Three kilowatts also sits under a European domestic socket, which carries 230 volts at 16 amps. None of that makes the EX30's version weak, but it does mean the feature lands roughly four years after the cars that turned it into a selling point.

Plug & Charge stops at model year 2026, and vehicle-to-load does not

The same update carries a second feature that behaves in the opposite way. Plug & Charge, which authenticates and bills automatically the moment you connect to a compatible charger, applies from model year 2026 and is arriving in selected European markets first. Vehicle-to-load reaches cars on the road; Plug & Charge does not. One update, one company, two different answers to the same question about what an owner who bought early is entitled to.

The EX60 supplies power too, and Volvo says more model lines follow

Volvo has confirmed that the new EX60, which entered production earlier this year, also supplies power, and says further model lines will follow. It has been using the same channel to add substantial things to cars in service, including a shared hazard-alert network spanning a million vehicles. Starting with the EX30 makes sense: more than 78,000 were registered in Europe in 2024, third among EVs behind only the Tesla Model Y and Model 3, and the car is now built in Ghent. That is a large installed base to hand a new capability to without touching the hardware.

AutoNext Take

The honest measure of a software-defined car is not how much it launches with. It is whether anything new ever reaches the cars already parked outside. Volvo has just done that on a compact EV whose earliest examples are three years old, for nothing, with no subscription and no workshop visit. Set against an industry that has spent five years working out how to charge monthly for hardware buyers already own, that is worth saying plainly.

Which makes the other half of the release the thing to watch. If Plug & Charge appears on pre-2026 EX30s within the next update cycle, the model-year line was commercial and Volvo should not have drawn it. If it never does, the charging hardware genuinely changed and the split was honest. EX30 owners will find out which, and the answer will tell them more about Volvo's software promise than the socket itself does.

Volvo just turned a million cars into one shared hazard network

A free over-the-air update gives the Volvo EX60, EX90 and ES90 four new cloud-based hazard alerts, covering large animals, pedestrians and cyclists, roadworks and crashes ahead. The warnings are shared beyond Volvo through the European Data for Road Safety framework, so other brands and traffic authorities can read them too.

Volvo's EX90 can finally do Dolby Atmos without leaving CarPlay

Volvo is rolling out spatial audio powered by Dolby Atmos inside Apple CarPlay on the EX90 and ES90, with the EX60 to follow once wireless CarPlay reaches it later in 2026. The feature needs the optional Bowers & Wilkins system, 25 speakers in the EX90, and it ends the trade-off that forced owners out of CarPlay to reach Atmos.
