BMW Recalls over 500,000 cars due to potential fire hazard including thousands in Belgium

BMW, the most popular car brand in Belgium for the last few years, starts a large scale recall

14/02/2026

BMW, which has been Belgium’s most popular car brand for years, is once again launching a large‑scale recall.

Worldwide, the issue affects hundreds of thousands of vehicles, with several thousand examples currently on the road in Belgium. The cause is a potential problem with the starter motor which, in extreme cases, can lead to smoke development and even fire.

What exactly is going on

According to BMW, internal production checks revealed that after a high number of start cycles, increased wear can occur in the starter motor’s magnetic switch. The consequences can vary:

  • Difficult starting

  • Complete starter motor failure

  • Possible short circuit

  • Localised overheating

  • In the worst case, fire while driving

BMW stresses that the risk is limited, but advises owners not to leave the vehicle unattended with the engine running. The issue mainly concerns vehicles built between July twenty twenty and July twenty twenty two.

Which BMW models are affected

The recall covers several popular models in the range, including:

  • 2 Series Coupe

  • 3 Series

  • 4 Series

  • 5 Series

  • 6 Series Gran Turismo

  • 7 Series

  • X4

  • X5

  • X6

  • Z4

In Germany, media reports suggest that more than twenty eight thousand vehicles are affected. International figures even mention up to five hundred seventy five thousand cars worldwide, although BMW has not officially confirmed that number so far.

Situation in Belgium

In Belgium, the recall affects several thousand vehicles. According to BMW Belux spokesperson Jeroen Lissens, affected owners have already been contacted by letter.

In around half of the cases, the starter motor has already been replaced. Affected customers may continue using their vehicles for now. Drivers can check online whether their car is involved using the chassis number. The German authorities also maintain a public database of recalls.

Not the first time

Notably, this is not the first time BMW has recalled vehicles due to a starter motor issue. Last autumn, a major recall was already carried out because of possible water ingress and corrosion in the same component.

Although the brand communicates quickly and takes action, this once again highlights how critical quality control remains, especially as modern vehicles become increasingly complex.

AutoNext analysis

Recalls are not unusual in the automotive world. Even premium brands are not immune. What matters most is transparency and speed of response.

BMW is acting proactively and is inspecting and repairing vehicles as a preventive measure. Still, the risk of fire, however small, remains a sensitive issue, particularly for relatively recent model years. Do you own a BMW built between twenty twenty and twenty twenty two? Then a quick check is certainly advisable.
