Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio gain a driver camera for 2027
A camera in the A-pillar buys the Giulia and Stelvio another year
Alfa Romeo has updated its whole range for the 2027 model year, and the change that matters sits in the front pillar of the Giulia and Stelvio: a driver-monitoring camera that EU rules have required on every new car since 7 July 2026. It keeps both on sale through 2027, while the Cassino plant that builds them now works five or six days a month.
Giulia and Stelvio add the camera the EU has required since 7 July 2026
The Giulia and Stelvio now carry a camera in the A-pillar and new software that watches the driver's eyes and head, Alfa Romeo's answer to the EU's Advanced Driver Distraction Warning rule. It has applied to new car types since July 2024 and to every newly registered car since 7 July 2026. That matters for two designs this old: the Giulia went on sale in 2016 and the Stelvio in 2017, and Stellantis has confirmed both stay in production until the end of 2027. The camera is what lets them get there.
Stelvio Quadrifoglio's 520 hp V6 gets 21-inch wheels as standard
The Stelvio Quadrifoglio, with its 520 hp 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6, now gets burnished 21-inch wheels as standard in place of the 20s. Both models swap the Alfa Romeo emblems on the bonnet and tailgate for black-and-white versions, and Anodised Blue joins the colour chart. Quadrifoglio buyers receive a voucher for a day at the Alfa Romeo Driving Academy, which other owners can book at a reduced price. The range keeps its Sprint, Veloce, Edizione Luna Rossa and Quadrifoglio versions. In Europe the engines are the 2.2 diesel with 160 hp and rear-wheel drive or 210 hp and Q4 all-wheel drive, while the UK and other markets keep the 280 hp 2.0 petrol.
Alfa Romeo Junior gets new interiors while the Tonale carries on unchanged
The Junior's changes are mostly inside: new door panels with contrast stitching and soft trim, a black premium-fabric Icona interior on the Junior and Sprint, and new upholstery with red details on the Ti and Veloce, with Sabelt seats in Alcantara as an option. New 19-inch four-hole wheels take 225/45 tyres, 10 mm wider than before. The 145 hp hybrid, the 156 hp electric car and the electric Veloce carry over. The Tonale gets no product changes and keeps its 175 hp hybrid, 130 hp diesel and 270 hp plug-in hybrid.
Cassino built 5,227 Giulias and Stelvios in the first nine months of 2026
Cassino built 8,897 cars between January and September, 37.1 percent fewer than a year earlier, according to the Fim-Cisl union's quarterly report on 6 October: 5,227 Giulias and Stelvios and 3,670 Maserati Grecales. It is the only Stellantis car plant in Italy to shrink this year, while the group's Italian output rose 28.3 percent to 340,745 vehicles. Cassino's roughly 2,120 workers have had 56 working days in nine months, and the lines are stopped again from 6 to 9 October.
Stellantis has pushed Cassino's future back to the end of 2026
Fim-Cisl expects Cassino to build about 12,000 cars in 2026, fewer than the 13,640 Ferrari delivered in 2025. Stellantis has postponed its decision on the plant's future to the end of the year, and the union points out that 18 to 24 months pass between announcing a new model and building it. Unions meet the company on 15 October. Before that, on 12 October, Alfa Romeo shows its Paris Motor Show concept, the first hint of what replaces the Giulia and Stelvio after 2027.
AutoNext Take
Alfa Romeo has made the right small decision. A camera and a software update cost a fraction of a new car, and they keep two of the sharpest-steering cars in their class on European order books for another year, including the last Quadrifoglios with a 520 hp V6, at a time when BMW is preparing an electric M3. Anyone who has wanted a Giulia or Stelvio has until the end of 2027, and the Stelvio Quadrifoglio on its new 21-inch wheels is the one to remember them by.
Cassino's problem will outlast the camera. Even a plan signed on 31 December, at the union's own 18 to 24 months, puts a new model on the Cassino line no earlier than the second half of 2028. When the last Giulia leaves the plant at the end of 2027, the factory that built Alfa Romeo's relaunch will spend at least six months with no Alfa Romeo to build.
