Bentley just named its big new model the Torcal, and it should be its first EV
A name, a date, and a very big moment for Crewe
Bentley has given us a name and a date, if not yet the full story. The British luxury maker has confirmed that its important new fourth model line will be called Torcal, and while Bentley is keeping the details close, it is widely expected to be the brand's first-ever electric car. Either way, this is one of the most significant new models in Bentley's recent history.
What's in the name
Torcal is a wonderfully evocative choice. It is named after El Torcal de Antequera, a dramatic limestone landscape in Andalusia in southern Spain, famous for its wind- and water-sculpted rock formations. Cleverly, the name also traces back to the Latin torquere, meaning to twist, the same root as the word torque, hinting at the effortless, muscular pulling power Bentley is known for and that an electric powertrain delivers in spades. It is exactly the kind of layered, meaningful name you would expect from a brand this obsessed with detail.
Bentley's fourth pillar
The Torcal becomes Bentley's fourth model line, sitting alongside the Continental GT, Flying Spur and Bentayga, and it will be built at the company's historic home in Crewe, England. Adding a whole new nameplate rather than reviving an old one is a statement of intent, signalling that this is a genuinely new direction for the brand rather than a reworking of something familiar. CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser has called it potentially the most considered car in Bentley's history.
The electric question
Here is where we have to be careful. Bentley's own announcement is, for now, a naming reveal focused on heritage and craftsmanship, and it does not spell out the powertrain. However, the Torcal has long been reported and expected to be Bentley's first fully electric car, the model that finally kicks off its shift to EVs. We would treat the electric angle as highly likely rather than officially confirmed until Bentley says so. Tellingly, the torque-themed name would suit an EV perfectly.
When we'll see it
For the full picture, mark 23 September 2026 in your diary. That is when Bentley will fully reveal the Torcal in London, presumably with the design, powertrain, performance and price all laid out. Until then, this is a carefully judged teaser designed to build anticipation, and on that score it is working nicely.
AutoNext Take
A brand-new Bentley model line does not come along often, so this is a genuinely big deal, especially if it does turn out to be the marque's electric debut. We love that Bentley has chosen a fresh, meaningful name rather than raiding the history books, and the torque wordplay is a neat touch. The pressure is real, though: an electric Bentley has to feel every bit as special, serene and superbly built as its combustion cars, or it risks disappointing very demanding buyers. Fingers crossed Crewe has nailed it. For now, luxury EV fans have a September date to look forward to. This is one of the tougher luxury EVs to get right, and rivals like Rolls-Royce will be watching closely, fresh off wild one-offs such as the Phantom Regatta.
It is a fascinating time for the ultra-luxury world: sister VW Group brand Bugatti just built the porcelain Mistral Blanc Eternel, all while the same group reportedly weighs selling Lamborghini and Ducati.
