BMW iX3 Wins “World Car of the Year” 2026 and the World Electric Vehicle Title
02/04/2026
For BMW Group, the achievement marks the tenth and eleventh titles in the history of the World Car Awards.
Sometimes a new car arrives that doesn’t just introduce a model, it signals a shift for an entire brand. That is precisely what happened with the BMW iX3, which has now been crowned both “World Car of the Year 2026” and “World Electric Vehicle 2026.” The awards were announced during the New York International Auto Show, where the first production model of BMW Neue Klasse secured a double victory against dozens of competitors.
A jury of 98 journalists chooses the iX3
The World Car Awards are judged by 98 automotive journalists from 33 countries, making it one of the most globally representative awards in the industry. After extensive test drives, the jury selected the BMW iX3 as the overall winner among 57 competing vehicles across all powertrain categories.
At the same time, the iX3 also topped the category for electric vehicles, beating 43 EV competitors. According to the jury, the new BMW impressed with its combination of driving dynamics, technology and overall engineering balance, a mix that has historically defined BMW’s strongest products.
And for the brand, the timing could hardly be more symbolic. Because the iX3 is not just another electric SUV. It is the first production model of the Neue Klasse, BMW’s most ambitious technological reset in decades.
Leadership behind the transformation
The success of the Neue Klasse is closely tied to the leadership of Oliver Zipse, who was recently named World Car Person of the Year 2026.
Under his leadership, BMW pursued what the company describes as a technology-open strategy, balancing electrification, digitalization and sustainability without abandoning the brand’s traditional engineering identity.
The jury praised Zipse for guiding BMW through a period of profound transformation while maintaining strong brand identity and profitability.
AutoNext Take
While many EVs today focus primarily on efficiency and digital features, BMW is clearly trying to preserve something that defined the brand for decades: driver engagement.
Winning both World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle suggests the strategy may already be resonating with experts. But the bigger story may lie ahead. Because the iX3 is only the first chapter of the Neue Klasse, a platform that will underpin an entire generation of BMW models.
