Every X3 M50 built from December gets 45 extra horsepower, Black Package or not

BMW lifts the X3 M50 xDrive's 3.0-litre straight-six from 398 to 443 hp, cutting 0 to 100 km/h to 4.4 seconds. The upgrade applies to every M50 built from December 2026, not only to cars ordered with the new Black Package that BMW presents alongside it. The six-cylinder also now meets Euro 7, the standard that is pushing several rival performance engines into retirement.

BMW X3 M50 straight-six rises from 398 to 443 hp

The X3 M50 xDrive's 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six, helped by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, now makes 443 hp instead of 398. BMW quotes 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds, down from 4.6. It also gives 4.1 seconds measured with a one-foot rollout, an American convention that starts the clock after the car has already moved 30 cm, so 4.4 is the figure to compare with European rivals. BMW has not yet published a new torque figure; the outgoing engine made 580 Nm.

At 443 hp the X3 M50 outguns the AMG GLC 43 and Audi SQ5

The extra 45 hp moves the X3 M50 clear of its two obvious rivals: the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 makes 421 hp from a four-cylinder, and the Audi SQ5 makes 367 hp from its V6. It also narrows the gap to the old X3 M Competition, which made 510 hp, from 112 hp to 67. BMW has no petrol X3 M in this generation, so the M50 is now the fastest combustion X3 it sells.

Euro 7 keeps the BMW six on sale after November 2027

BMW says the upgraded six-cylinder meets Euro 7, and so does the four-cylinder in the X3 20 xDrive. The timing matters: Euro 7 applies to newly approved models from 29 November 2026 and to every new car registered in the EU from 29 November 2027. Mercedes-AMG is retiring the A45 S because its engine cannot be made to meet the same standard. BMW is adding power to its six instead.

Black Package brings 22-inch M wheels and Alcantara to the X3 M50

The Black Package is an option for the X3 M50 only. Outside it adds 22-inch M Polygon 1134 Black wheels, gloss-black brake calipers with a monochrome M logo and gloss-black badges with a silver outline. Inside, BMW Individual Alcantara covers parts of the dashboard, the door cards and the centre armrest, the seats are Alcantara and Veganza with blue stitching and piping, and several controls get CraftedClarity glass. BMW has not announced a price.

Every BMW X3 gets a cabin update from December 2026

The rest of the X3 range gets smaller changes from the same month. A soft-touch surface now covers the area in front of the central display, the dashboard gets new stitching, and ambient lighting reaches the centre-console bin and the inner door handles. A stainless-steel boot sill and a redesigned glovebox button complete the list, while M Sport and M Performance cars get Dark Silver door sills. The X3 now sells alongside the electric iX3, built on a third shift in Debrecen.

AutoNext Take

Euro 7 was supposed to be the moment fast combustion SUVs got slower, and BMW has gone the other way. The X3 M50 gains 45 hp, passes the standard that ends the A45 S, and now beats the GLC 43 by 22 hp and the SQ5 by 76. For a buyer who wants one fast, practical car with six cylinders, this is the best version of the current X3 so far.

The open question is price, which BMW has not set. If the December price lists keep the M50 within €3,000 of the current car, the extra power costs less than most people spend on wheels, and the M50 becomes the default pick in its class rather than the outsider.

The new BMW X5 has X-shaped lights and looks like a supersized iX3

BMW has teased the next-generation X5 (codenamed G65) ahead of its 30 June reveal, showing bold new X-shaped daytime running lights and a cleaner, Neue Klasse-inspired front that closely echoes the new iX3. The slimmer grille marks a clear move away from oversized kidneys. The X5 will be offered with five powertrains: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, a fully electric iX5 and, from 2028, a hydrogen fuel-cell version.

The most powerful four-cylinder hot hatch is bowing out, and Euro 7 is why

Mercedes-AMG is retiring the A 45 S after 13 years with a Final Edition, ending the hand-built four-cylinder AMG hot hatch. It keeps the 421 hp 2.0-litre turbo and adds yellow accents, forged wheels and Dark Chrome details, but no mechanical changes. The M139 engine cannot meet Euro 7, so the A 35 and A 45 S are being withdrawn, with an electric AMG A-Class expected from 2028.

BMW puts Debrecen on 24-hour shifts to clear 50,000 iX3 orders

BMW has put its Debrecen plant on three shifts to build the iX3 around the clock, after 100,000 European orders in under a year and more than 50,000 cars built. A second Neue Klasse model starts there this autumn. The plant assembles its own battery packs, but the cells still arrive from Asia while CATL's Debrecen cell lines stay halted.
