BMW puts Debrecen on 24-hour shifts to clear 50,000 iX3 orders

A third shift starts at BMW's Hungarian plant less than a year after the first iX3, with 100,000 European orders booked, a second Neue Klasse model due this autumn and local cell supply still on hold.

BMW's Neue Klasse bet now needs a night shift to keep up

BMW's plant in Debrecen, Hungary, moved to a third shift this week and now builds the iX3 24 hours a day. The company counts 100,000 European orders for the first Neue Klasse car and has built more than 50,000 of them since October 2025, which BMW calls the fastest ramp-up of any plant in its history. A second Neue Klasse model joins the line this autumn. The cells, for now, still arrive by ship.

BMW puts Debrecen on 24-hour shifts to clear 50,000 iX3 orders

100,000 iX3 orders in Europe and a second shift that came early, in February 2026

Series production of the iX3 began in Debrecen in October 2025, a second shift followed in February 2026 ahead of the original schedule, and the third arrived in September, less than a year after the first car. BMW says the plant, which employs more than 5,000 people and cost more than 2 billion euros, has never ramped up a model this fast. The 50,000th iX3 left the line on 28 July. Every one of the 100,000 orders BMW is counting comes from Europe; the car is not yet on sale in the United States, where a Neue Klasse line in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, is planned for 2027.

Debrecen's 150,000-a-year capacity puts the backlog at about four months of output

The plant was designed for around 150,000 electric cars a year, or roughly 12,500 a month on three shifts. With half of the order book built, close to 50,000 customers are waiting, which is about four months of production at the design rate before a single new order is counted. That is the arithmetic behind the third shift: on two shifts, at the pace that produced 50,000 cars in nine months, the queue would have grown faster than the line could shrink it. The round-the-clock schedule is the last lever inside the building, and from this autumn it has to serve two models.

The previous iX3 came from Shenyang with a 20.7% EU duty; this one crosses no border

The iX3 this car replaces was built only at BMW Brilliance's plant in Shenyang and shipped to Europe, and from 30 October 2024 it carried the EU's 20.7 percent countervailing duty for cooperating Chinese exporters on top of the standard 10 percent. Its successor is built inside the single market, with battery packs assembled on site: Debrecen is the first of five BMW plants, alongside Straßkirchen in Bavaria, Shenyang, San Luis Potosí and Woodlawn in South Carolina, where the high-voltage battery is put together next to the assembly hall. The tariff exposure BMW spent 2024 complaining about is gone from this model line, and the new plant is why.

The cells still come from Asia while CATL's Debrecen lines have stood still since 25 August

The packs are Hungarian; the cells inside them are not, yet. BMW's sixth-generation cylindrical cells come from CATL and EVE Energy, and both chose Debrecen for their European plants. CATL's 7.34 billion euro site had not started series cell output when county inspectors ordered its foil-cutting, winding and drying workshops to stop on 25 August, after nine workers returned elevated nickel readings; only equipment debugging is allowed until every defect is corrected. EVE's neighbouring plant is not producing yet. Until one of them runs, every cell in a 24-hour Debrecen car is imported, and the supply chain BMW built the plant to shorten still begins in Asia.

A second Neue Klasse model starts in Debrecen this autumn, and BMW has not named it

BMW confirms only that another Neue Klasse model enters production in Debrecen this autumn. The i3 saloon is built in Munich, so the obvious candidate is the coupé-roofed sibling of the iX3, widely expected to be badged iX4, which BMW has not confirmed. Whatever the badge, it shares the iX3's 800-volt platform, and the iX3 50 xDrive already sets the bar the second car has to meet: 469 hp, up to 805 km of WLTP range and 400 kW charging.

Three shifts in Debrecen say more about BMW's rivals than about BMW. Mercedes builds the electric C-Class an hour down the road in Kecskemét on cells CATL is shipping in from other plants, and Volkswagen cut its 2026 margin guidance to 1 percent this week. In that company, a European EV factory that cannot build fast enough is an outlier, and the reason is unglamorous: the iX3 is an X3-sized car sold to people who were already buying X3s, with 805 km of range to remove the last excuse. BMW has converted its own customers rather than found new ones, and a 100,000-car order book is what conversion looks like when the product is right.

The dates are already set. Debrecen passed 50,000 cars on 28 July on two shifts; on three it should pass 100,000 by February 2027. If BMW is still quoting 100,000 European orders when that car rolls off, the night shift will have caught up with demand rather than demand outrunning the plant, and the second model will be there to fill the line. And if CATL's workshops across town are still on debugging duty at that point, Europe's fastest EV ramp-up will have spent its first 16 months on imported cells, which is the part of the Neue Klasse story nobody in Munich wants to put a date on.

BMW's newest factory just hit 50,000 electric SUVs faster than any plant before it

BMW's Debrecen plant in Hungary has produced its 50,000th iX3, just nine months after series production began, making it the fastest ramp-up of any new BMW Group factory. A second shift was added ahead of schedule to meet demand. The iX3 is the first series-production model of BMW's Neue Klasse electric platform, and the plant is tracking toward 100,000 customer orders.

BMW iX3 Wins “World Car of the Year” 2026 and the World Electric Vehicle Title

Sometimes a new car arrives that doesn’t just introduce a model, it signals a shift for an entire brand. That is precisely what happened with the BMW iX3, which has now been crowned both “World Car of the Year 2026” and “World Electric Vehicle 2026.” The awards were announced during the New York International Auto Show, where the first production model of BMW Neue Klasse secured a double victory against dozens of competitors.
