The V8 returns to every F-150 as Ford recalls 223,472 of them
Ford's biggest F-150 update in years lands in the same week as a 223,472-truck recall
Ford revealed the 2027 F-150 on Tuesday with a new base engine, the 5.0-litre V8 back on every trim and hands-free towing. Greg Christensen, who runs Ford's North American truck business, calls it the most comprehensive update in years. Two days earlier, on Saturday, NHTSA had published a recall of 223,472 F-150s built between January 2023 and August 2026 whose fuel tank can come loose on the move.
A 3.0-litre EcoBoost replaces the 2.7 and the 3.3 V6 at 325 hp
The 2027 F-150's entry engine is a new 3.0-litre EcoBoost V6 that replaces both the naturally aspirated 3.3 and the 2.7-litre EcoBoost. It makes the same 325 hp and 542 Nm as the 2.7; Ford's only claim is 10 to 11 percent more torque in everyday driving. Europeans know this engine from the Ranger Raptor, where it makes 292 hp and 491 Nm on this side of the Atlantic and 405 hp in America. The 2.7 arrived for the 2015 model year as the engine meant to make the V8 optional, and by December 2015 it was in 30 percent of F-150s sold.
The 5.0 V8 returns to King Ranch and Platinum, gone since 2023
The 5.0-litre V8 is back on the King Ranch and Platinum for the first time since the 2023 model year, so every trim from XL up now offers eight cylinders. Its 400 hp and 556 Nm are less torque than the 3.5 EcoBoost's 678 Nm, which keeps the class-leading 6,124 kg tow rating, but Christensen says customers ask for the displacement, the sound and the durability. Ram put the Hemi back into its 1500 and credited it for a 10 percent sales rebound, and Ford is following the same customer. The 720 hp supercharged Raptor R is unchanged, while new Tremor Low and Raptor Low packages strip heated seats, head-up display and premium audio to cut roughly $5,300 and $4,000 from the entry prices, and a first F-150 Carhartt edition starts at $62,660.
NHTSA listed 223,472 F-150s with loose fuel tanks two days before the reveal
Saturday's recall covers 223,472 F-150s built between 4 January 2023 and 27 August 2026, which reaches into the 2027 model year. The front fuel-tank strap can be fitted with its T-slots outside the frame rail, and the assembly-line cameras meant to catch that did not. A loose tank can leak, stall the engine or drop onto the road; Ford counts 16 warranty claims and no crashes, and owner letters go out between 21 and 28 September. Two smaller F-150 campaigns came in the same batch: 37 trucks with an undersized rear axle bearing and 17 Raptors with untorqued Panhard rod bolts. Before that batch, Ford's 2026 tally already stood at 71 recall campaigns on 9 September, against 33 for Chrysler, 23 for Toyota and 22 for General Motors.
BlueCruise now tows hands-free on 209,000 km of divided highway
BlueCruise with Towing lets the 2027 F-150 drive hands-free with a trailer on about 209,000 km of mapped divided highway in North America. More than 75 percent of F-150 buyers tow, so Ford validated it on 800 trailer configurations; the driver enters the trailer's dimensions and the truck hands control back when sway or tyre pressure falls outside its limits. It is highway-only, needs a subscription once the trial ends, and GM's Super Cruise has towed hands-free on the Sierra and Silverado since 2022. Europe is still rolling out hands-off driving one country at a time, and BMW's city version has a 2027 date with Germany first.
The only F-150 Ford sold in Europe was the Lightning, and it is gone
None of this reaches Europe through Ford's own dealers. The only F-150 Ford ever sold officially here was the electric Lightning, delivered in Norway from February 2024 and in small numbers in Switzerland. Ford ended the Lightning on 15 December 2025 with a $19.5 billion charge and a promised range-extender successor good for more than 1,100 km. The Lightning sold 27,307 in America in 2025 against 801,525 F-Series, and the 1,200 hourly workers from its Dearborn electric plant were moved to a third crew building petrol F-150s and Super Dutys. The V8 lives on in the next Mustang as a hybrid; in the F-150 it lives on as the answer to a bad year.

Every part of this refresh is something Ford already knew how to sell, and that is the point. F-Series sales fell 13.3 percent in the first half of 2026 to 357,801 after the Novelis aluminium fire cost the company $2 billion and 90,000 to 100,000 trucks, and the answer is a bigger petrol engine, a cheaper Raptor and a Carhartt badge. The awkward part is that the trucks Ford already knew how to build are the ones being recalled, and their build window, January 2023 to August 2026, is exactly the period Christensen describes as lacking stability.
The first 2027 trucks reach customers in early 2027 and the recall letters go out by 28 September. Ford's 2026 recall count was 71 on 9 September, more than twice the next automaker's. If it passes 100 before the first V8 King Ranch is delivered, the stability Christensen says he is seeing exists in the order book and not on the line, and the F-150 will have been refreshed faster than it was fixed.
