Jaguar’s Electric Future Begins Here: The Legendary Models Inspiring the New Four-Door GT
01/04/2026
Jaguar draws the inspiration for its future from its past.
Few brands in the automotive world carry a heritage quite like Jaguar. From the elegant curves of the Jaguar E-Type to the aristocratic composure of the Jaguar XJ Series I, Jaguar has always balanced two seemingly opposite qualities: performance and refinement.
Now the British marque is preparing for what may be the most radical transformation in its history. Later this year, Jaguar will unveil a fully electric four-door grand tourer, a car designed not only to mark the brand’s transition into a new era, but to redefine what a modern Jaguar should feel like.
Understanding the DNA of Jaguar
Rather than beginning the development process with spreadsheets, software models or purely digital simulations, Jaguar engineers started with something far more traditional. They went driving.
Under the internal program called “Spirit of Jaguar Drive”, the development team spent time behind the wheel of some of the brand’s most iconic models. The goal was simple: rediscover the emotional and dynamic qualities that made Jaguar special in the first place.
Cars such as the Jaguar XK120, the Jaguar XJ Coupé, the Jaguar XJS, and of course the legendary E-Type became rolling laboratories. According to Jaguar’s Director of Vehicle Engineering Matt Becker, the goal was not nostalgia. It was understanding.
The team wanted to rediscover the delicate balance between effortless performance and luxurious comfort that historically defined the brand. In the words of Jaguar founder Sir William Lyons: “Driving should be a pleasure, not a chore.” That philosophy still guides the brand today.
A new electric GT with two distinct personalities
The upcoming four-door electric GT promises to combine two characters in a single car. On one hand, the car is expected to deliver intense performance and dynamic handling, something Jaguar historically mastered with models like the E-Type. On the other hand, the car will focus heavily on refinement, long-distance comfort and composure, echoing grand tourers such as the XJS and the XJ.
Visually, Jaguar designers also retained elements that clearly connect the future model with its heritage. A long bonnet, a low roofline, and elegant proportions remain defining elements, even though the new GT will break many conventions typically associated with electric vehicles. In other words, Jaguar’s future EV will still look unmistakably like a Jaguar.
AutoNext Take: Jaguar’s most important transformation in decades
Manufacturers like Porsche, Bentley, and Maserati are all navigating the delicate transition between heritage and electrification. But Jaguar’s approach may be one of the boldest.
Rather than gradually evolving its lineup, the company has chosen to reinvent itself almost entirely, positioning future Jaguars at the very top of the luxury EV segment.
If the new four-door GT delivers on its promises, it will not simply be another electric sedan. It will become the foundation of Jaguar’s next chapter. A chapter where the spirit of cars like the XK120, E-Type and XJ is not forgotten, but reborn in a completely new technological form. The world premiere of the new Jaguar electric GT is scheduled for September this year.
