Kia's K4 Hybrid: 154 hp for Ceed's successor stuck at 115 hp
Kia's K4 Hybrid starts production on 15 October with 154 hp and no price
Kia will start building the K4 Hybrid on 15 October 2026, adding a full hybrid to the hatchback and Sportswagon it sells in Europe as the Ceed's successor. The 1.6-litre GDI engine and six-speed dual-clutch gearbox make 154 hp combined, the same figure as the front-drive Seltos Hybrid, and Kia has published nothing else: no consumption, no battery size, no price. It is the sixth K4 powertrain, and in at least one market it will be the second.
Dutch BPM cut the K4 to one 115 hp engine in April
The Netherlands launched the K4 with two engines, the 115 hp 1.0 T-GDI mild hybrid and the 180 hp 1.6 T-GDI. Autoweek reported on 30 April that the 1.6 was withdrawn after its annual re-homologation returned a higher CO2 figure, which lifted BPM on a K4 hatchback from about €8,000 for the 1.0 to €13,000-14,000 for the 1.6, and the importer decided the car had no future at that price. Since then the Dutch K4 has been a 115 hp three-cylinder with a 0-100 km/h time of around 12 seconds, at €33,995 for the hatchback and €35,495 for the Sportswagon. Kia's hybrid release still lists the 150 and 180 hp 1.6 as currently available, which describes the European catalogue and not the price list in the market where the Ceed sold 48,666 units.
154 hp is the Seltos Hybrid drivetrain, not the Niro's 141 hp
Kia has not confirmed the split, but 154 hp from a 1.6 GDI and a six-speed dual-clutch is exactly the front-drive Seltos Hybrid revealed for Europe, so the K4 gets the newer system rather than the 141 hp unit in the Niro Hybrid, which Germany prices from €33,690. Kia has given the Seltos Hybrid no European production date, only 'a later date' after the petrol Seltos entered production in April, so the K4's 15 October is currently the earlier one. Against the C-segment's hybrid benchmarks the K4 sits between Toyota's 140 hp Corolla 1.8 and Honda's 184 hp Civic e:HEV, and above Peugeot's 145 hp 308 Hybrid.
Every European K4 comes from Pesquería in Mexico, not from Žilina like the Ceed
The Ceed was built at Kia's plant in Žilina, Slovakia, for nearly two decades. The K4 hatchback and Sportswagon are built at Kia Mexico in Pesquería, Nuevo León, and shipped across the Atlantic, a fact that appears in Kia Mexico's export announcements and in none of Kia Europe's K4 releases. Žilina now builds the Sportage, EV4, EV2 and, since 29 May, the new XCeed. Hyundai killed the i30 in June with no successor, so the K4 is now the group's only C-segment hatchback in Europe, and the only one it does not build here.
The K4 has no plug-in hybrid, which the Ceed Sportswagon and XCeed had
Kia's European reveal in September 2025 promised five powertrains, two of them electrified: the 48-volt mild hybrid and this full hybrid. The Ceed Sportswagon and XCeed offered a 141 hp plug-in hybrid with an 8.9 kWh battery; the K4 does not, and Kia has said nothing about one. Electric duty in the segment goes to the EV4 hatchback and fastback, built in Žilina and priced from €37,590 in Germany. The K4 Hybrid is therefore the most electrified K4 there will be, which matters in Belgium, where the tax deductibility of a company car without a plug has been falling since 2025 and reaches zero in 2028, and in the Netherlands, where the CO2-based BPM that removed the 1.6 will price the hybrid on a figure Kia has not yet published.
Petrol K4 prices: €28,890 in Germany, €22,990 in Belgium, €33,995 in the Netherlands
The petrol K4 hatchback starts at €28,890 in Germany and €29,890 as a Sportswagon. Kia Belgium advertises the car from €22,990 with every premium and discount applied, and the Netherlands pays €33,995 and €35,495, of which around €8,000 is BPM. Where the hybrid lands decides what it is: the Niro Hybrid's German price is €4,800 above the petrol K4, and the Corolla that has led this segment's hybrid sales for years is the car Kia has to undercut. With production from 15 October, first European deliveries fall in the last weeks of 2026 or early 2027, so the 2027 price lists are where the answer will appear.
AutoNext Take
Kia launched the K4 into Europe's most CO2-sensitive tax systems with a three-cylinder and a 1.6 turbo, and the Dutch result was a one-engine price list within months. The hybrid is the repair, and it is the car the K4 should have launched as: the Ceed sold 48,666 units in the Netherlands on being cheap to tax and cheap to run, and a 115 hp mild hybrid with a 12-second sprint was never going to hold that ground against a Corolla.
The hybrid's Dutch and Belgian prices are the whole story, and they are the one thing Kia left out of the release. If the K4 Hybrid is not the volume K4 on both price lists by the end of March 2027, the Ceed's 48,666 will read as a ceiling Kia walked away from when it moved the car to Mexico and gave it the wrong engines first.
