MG's 16,300 euro Taycan look-alike is the rare clone that could actually reach Europe

The MG 07 is a Taycan-shaped EV with up to 845 km of claimed range, from a brand that already sells across Europe.

The Porsche shape is the bait, the badge on the bonnet is the story

MG has revealed the 07, an electric four-door coupe that looks a lot like a Porsche Taycan and starts at roughly 16,260 euro in China. Cheap cars that borrow Porsche's silhouette are not new; Chinese brands turn them out regularly, and they almost never reach Europe. This one is different for one reason that has nothing to do with the styling: MG already sells all over Europe, which means for once the look-alike has a way in.

What the MG 07 actually is

Underneath the resemblance sits a genuinely modern set of numbers. The 07 is a 4.88 metre four-door coupe with a 697 litre boot, a 168 litre frunk and an optional underfloor fridge. The base car pairs a 67 kWh semi-solid-state CATL battery with a 236 hp motor for a claimed 650 km of range and 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds, from about 16,260 euro. The flagship MG 07 845 steps up to a 91 kWh pack on an 800-volt architecture for a claimed 845 km and 315 hp, doing the sprint in 5.9 seconds, for roughly 21,430 euro. Chinese deliveries begin at the end of August 2026, with the long-range versions following in October, and it lands squarely against the Geely Galaxy TT and the Xiaomi SU7. Europe, for now, is unconfirmed.

The looks are the least interesting part

Yes, the 07 reads as a Taycan from the front and a Panamera from the side, with a dash of Xiaomi's SU7 in the details. That will get the clicks. But design-borrowing from Porsche has become so routine among Chinese manufacturers that it barely qualifies as news any more, and on its own it tells you nothing about whether a car is any good or whether you will ever be able to buy one. The silhouette is the hook. It is not the point.

Read the range, the price and the driven wheels carefully

Three things need an asterisk. That 845 km is measured on China's CLTC cycle, which flatters range heavily; expect something closer to 600 km on Europe's stricter WLTP standard. The 16,260 euro is a Chinese domestic price, and import duties, homologation and European margins would inflate it well before it reached a showroom here, so the giant-killing sticker almost certainly does not survive the journey intact. And for all the Taycan cosplay, both versions are front-wheel drive, something no Porsche sports saloon has ever been. The car is still cheap for what it offers. It just will not be this cheap, and it is not a Taycan underneath.

Why MG is not just another clone-maker

This is the part that matters. Most Porsche look-alikes come from brands Europe has never heard of and never will. MG, owned by China's SAIC, is the opposite: it is one of the fastest-growing names on the continent, with dealers, servicing and buyer trust already in place. It is arriving in the same wave as Leapmotor, which has already outsold Porsche in Europe this year, and Chery, now setting up its own Belgian network. The 07 is MG using a borrowed shape as a shortcut into the executive-sedan space that BMW, Mercedes and Porsche have owned for decades, and it is one of the very few clone-makers with the infrastructure to actually try.

AutoNext Take

It is easy, and a little lazy, to file the MG 07 under funny Chinese Porsche copy and move on. The resemblance is the bit everyone will screenshot, but it is the least meaningful thing about the car. Strip it away and you are left with a 4.88 metre electric sedan, real range, a proper CATL battery and a price that even after the European mark-up will undercut anything German by a distance.

That is the actual threat, and it is not really about Porsche at all. MG does not need this car to be a Taycan. It needs it to make a 30,000 euro executive EV feel expensive, the same way Chinese brands are already reshaping the mainstream. The badge on the bonnet is the giveaway. When the clone comes from a brand you can already service down the road, it stops being a novelty and starts being a competitor. Watch the dealer list, not the design.

It is the 9X: Zeekr's super-hybrid flagship is coming to Europe with 897 hp

Zeekr has confirmed the 9X for Europe, the large luxury SUV it teased days ago. The European car uses a twin-motor 900V super-hybrid with a 2.0-litre turbo four and a 55.1 kWh battery for 897 hp, 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds and a combined range of about 737 km. It is detuned from China's tri-motor version, and pricing and a firm on-sale date are still to come.
