Mick Schumacher lost his seat, then signed for the Indy 500 winners
Nobody dropped Mick Schumacher, his Rahal Letterman Lanigan car stopped existing
In July, Rahal Letterman Lanigan agreed to sell one of its IndyCar charters to Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, the first such sale since the series introduced them. That took the team from four cars to three, and Graham Rahal and Louis Foster kept theirs. On Friday, Meyer Shank Racing confirmed that Schumacher will drive its number 66 Honda in 2027.
Meyer Shank Racing puts Schumacher in the number 66 Honda next to Marcus Armstrong
Schumacher takes the second MSR seat for 2027, alongside Marcus Armstrong, who enters a third season with the team and switches to the number 60 entry. The pair line up together for the first time at the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg on 5 to 7 March. Carbon specialist ENVE Composites joins the programme at the same time, arriving from professional cycling by way of USF2000 and Indy NXT. Schumacher still has one race to run for Rahal Letterman Lanigan, this weekend's season finale at Laguna Seca.
The charter behind his car sold for a reported 13 million dollars
That sale is what created this move. Rahal Letterman Lanigan agreed in principle in July to transfer one charter to Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, which returns to full-time IndyCar in 2027 as a result. Sports Business Journal reported a price of around 13 million dollars, a figure neither team has confirmed. A charter guarantees a place on the grid and a share of series revenue, so what changed hands was an asset rather than a driver's contract. Schumacher was simply the person left standing when the music stopped.
Felix Rosenqvist won the 2026 Indianapolis 500 for MSR, then left for Arrow McLaren
The team Schumacher joins is the reigning Indianapolis 500 winner. Rosenqvist took the 500 for Meyer Shank this year, the team's second win at the Speedway after Helio Castroneves in 2021, and confirmed in June that he was leaving. He goes to Arrow McLaren for 2027 alongside Scott Dixon, and that is the vacancy Schumacher fills. It is a rare case of a driver losing a seat through no fault of his own and landing at a quicker team a few weeks later.
All 200 laps at Indianapolis made him the 2026 Indy 500 Rookie of the Year
Schumacher had never raced an oval before this season. He finished the Indianapolis 500 in 18th place with all 200 laps completed, which earned him Rookie of the Year, and he qualified fourth at both Phoenix and Milwaukee. His best result was eighth at Nashville Superspeedway. Team co-owner Mike Shank singled out exactly that when he explained the signing, calling oval pace a huge hurdle for any driver arriving in IndyCar without the experience. His 2027 campaign will be the last full season before the IR-28, IndyCar's first new car in 15 years, arrives in 2028.
Two Formula 1 seasons, 43 starts and an Alpine Hypercar exit came first
Schumacher won the FIA Formula 3 European title in 2018 and the Formula 2 championship in 2020, then made 43 grand prix starts for Haas across 2021 and 2022. When Formula 1 did not come back, he spent two seasons in Alpine's Hypercar programme in the World Endurance Championship, with podium finishes and multiple starts at Le Mans, and left it in November 2025 to chase a single-seater drive. IndyCar was the answer, and a second contract turns it from an experiment into a career.
AutoNext Take
The sequence is the story. Schumacher did not out-negotiate anyone. The entry that carried his car was sold to another team, and he still ended up in a faster one. That is what a charter system does to a driver market: the grid slot becomes a tradable asset with a price attached, and the person sitting in it is the part that moves. The announcement landed on the Friday of the Italian Grand Prix, where Ferrari is running a Michael Schumacher tribute livery, which is a fair measure of where the two halves of this family's story now sit.
The claim worth testing is that the ovals were never the problem. The doubt about Schumacher in America was always the circle tracks, and the circle tracks are where he was fastest: fourth on the grid at Phoenix and Milwaukee, 200 laps out of 200 at Indianapolis at the first attempt. Meyer Shank has won two of the last six Indianapolis 500s, so the equipment will not be the excuse. If Schumacher qualifies inside the top ten at the Speedway in May 2027, the charter sale will read as the best thing that ever happened to him. If he is a mid-pack road course driver who happens to finish the 500, he has changed teams and nothing else.
