MINI Countryman E Finally Breaks the 500 km Barrier

The electric MINI grows up and takes direct aim at the Model Y, ID.4 and co

28/01/2026

MINI is taking a remarkably big step forward in its electric strategy in 2026. With a thorough technical update, the MINI Countryman E gets a fully electric range of more than 500 kilometres (WLTP) for the first time.

This transforms the biggest MINI ever from a fun city EV into a fully-fledged electric SUV that effortlessly handles long distances too. And that is no small detail, because this was precisely the weak spot of the electric Countryman until now.

More than 500 km: Why This Is a Turning Point

With up to 501 km of WLTP range, MINI suddenly positions the Countryman E right in the heart of Europe's most fiercely contested EV segment. Think of heavyweights such as the Tesla Model Y, Volkswagen ID.4, Škoda Enyaq and Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Where MINI used to score mainly on design and driving fun, but lost out on efficiency, that gap is now resolutely being closed. The key? Not just a bigger battery, but smarter technology.

Silicon Carbide: The Quiet Hero of This Upgrade

Central to the update is a new silicon carbide (SiC) inverter. That sounds technical (and it is), but the effect is concrete:

  • less energy loss

  • more efficient power conversion

  • more kilometres from the same battery

On top of that, the net battery capacity grows to 65.2 kWh, while low-friction wheel bearings on the front axle further reduce rolling resistance. MINI takes a typically BMW-like approach here: optimising the details, rather than brute-force enlargement.

More Practical Than Ever: Space, Comfort and Charging Speed

The MINI Countryman has not been a “mini” for a long time, and that is an advantage here. With a boot capacity of up to 1,450 litres, it works perfectly as a family car, lifestyle SUV or electric road-trip car. Charging goes smoothly too:

  • DC fast charging from 10 to 80% in under 30 minutes

  • ideal for long trips and holiday journeys

Anyone who wants four-wheel drive can opt for the MINI Countryman SE All4, good for up to 467 km WLTP and extra traction in all conditions.

Design: MINI Stays MINI (But More Aerodynamic)

On the outside, the Countryman remains recognisably MINI, but subtle aerodynamic tweaks make a world of difference. With a drag coefficient of 0.26, it scores remarkably well within the compact SUV segment. The Favoured Trim puts extra emphasis on appearance, including:

  • Blazing Blue body colour

  • silver-coloured roof and mirror caps

  • 20-inch Windmill Spoke wheels

The result is an electric MINI that not only looks fun, but is also measurably more efficient than before.

Inside: OLED, Software and Level 2 Autonomy

The interior is dominated by the 24 cm round OLED display, by now a MINI signature. From infotainment to driver assistance systems: everything runs through that central screen.

Thanks to advanced assistance systems, the Countryman offers autonomous driving functions up to Level 2, positioning it technologically alongside premium competitors such as the BMW iX1 and Mercedes-Benz EQA.

Conclusion: Finally a Real Contender

With this update, the MINI Countryman E becomes more than a design statement for the first time. The 500+ km range suddenly makes it:

  • relevant for lease drivers

  • attractive for families

  • credible as an alternative to the Model Y and ID.4

MINI proves here that electrification does not have to mean character disappears. On the contrary: the Countryman E combines playful driving dynamics, premium finish and now also grown-up efficiency. The biggest MINI ever? Certainly.
But also: the most complete MINI yet.
