
The next Alpine A110 is electric, and it is about to climb the Goodwood hill
One of the great modern driver's cars is about to reinvent itself completely
Alpine is about to show the world where the A110 goes next, and it is electric. The development mule for the third-generation A110, an all-electric sports car built on Alpine's new bespoke platform, will make its global public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, running up the famous hillclimb every day of the event.
What the mule is
A mule is a development car, a test vehicle used to prove the technology that will underpin a future model. This one previews the third generation of the A110, the lightweight mid-engined coupe that re-established Alpine as a maker of seriously talented driver's cars. Alpine will demonstrate it daily on the Goodwood hillclimb between 9 and 12 July, giving the public its first proper look at the car in action, albeit still wearing development disguise.
Electric, on a purpose-built platform
The big change is the powertrain. The next A110 will be fully electric, and Alpine is bold about its ambitions, describing it as a true electric sports car designed to outperform the best combustion rivals on sale today. It is built on the new Alpine Performance Platform, an architecture developed specifically for the brand rather than borrowed from a mainstream EV. That distinction matters: a sports car needs a structure tuned for agility and feel, not just for packaging a battery.
The end of the petrol A110
The timing is poignant. The current combustion A110 has entered the final months of its production life, so Goodwood becomes a handover moment, the old car taking its bow as its electric successor climbs the same hill. Alpine says it is entering a new phase of its history with more customers buying its cars than ever, helped by the electric A290 hot hatch and the 470 hp A390 fastback launched in 2025.
An Alpine showcase at Goodwood
The mule will not be alone. Alpine is bringing a full lineup to Goodwood, including the A290, the A390, the current A110 and a 2012 V8-powered Alpine E20 Formula 1 car for demonstration runs. Drivers from the BWT Alpine Formula 1 team, among them Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto, are also due to take part, underlining how much Alpine is using the event as a statement of intent.

The A110 is one of the few modern sports cars that genuinely deserves the affection it gets, light, delicate and alive in a way most rivals are not, so an electric replacement is the bravest thing Alpine could attempt. The entire magic of the current car comes from its low weight, and batteries are heavy. Everything therefore rests on whether the new Alpine Performance Platform can preserve that featherweight feel with an EV powertrain. If Alpine pulls it off, it becomes the template for how to make an electric sports car that enthusiasts actually love.
