smart Concept #2 reinvents the city car: small footprint, big ambition
22/04/2026
Tiny footprint, bold personality, and unapologetically different.
smart is trying to do something hard: make people fall in love with the city car again. At its Global Brand Event in Beijing, the brand unveiled the smart Concept #2, a clear preview of the upcoming all-electric successor to the iconic two-seater. And this isn’t just another EV. This is smart attempting a full reset.
Function becomes fashion and that’s exactly the point
The Concept #2 doesn’t try to hide its purpose. It embraces it. A compact, almost minimalist silhouette, just 2.79 meters long, with wheels pushed to the corners and a turning circle of just 6.95 meters. Everything screams city-first thinking. But visually, it goes further than anything smart has done before.
The design language is expressive, almost playful. Matte white meets warm gold, with subtle transparent surfaces hiding unexpected details underneath. It feels less like a car and more like a personal object, something between mobility and identity. smart calls it “Function becomes Fashion”. And for once, that marketing line actually fits.
Built for Europe, even if revealed in China
Despite the Beijing debut, this car is clearly aimed at Europe. smart openly states the #2 is designed around how European customers live and move: short distances, dense cities, and a growing need for efficient electric mobility without complexity.
Underneath, the new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA) platform promises:
up to 300 km of range
fast charging from 10 to 80% in under 20 minutes
Vehicle-to-Load functionality for everyday flexibility
Those are not headline-grabbing numbers but that’s exactly the point. This car isn’t trying to impress on paper. It’s trying to work in real life. And frankly, that’s refreshing.
smart’s bigger play: from niche brand to full portfolio
The Concept #2 is only part of the story. smart is quietly evolving from a one-car brand into a full portfolio player. With models like the #1, #3, and #5 already on the market, and now the introduction of the #6 EHD fastback sedan for China, the brand is scaling fast.
But here’s the interesting tension: While smart expands into larger, more premium segments globally, the #2 pulls it back to its roots, the pure city car. That balance will define whether smart succeeds or loses its identity.
AutoNext Take
Cars are getting bigger, heavier, more expensive while cities are doing the exact opposite. Smaller streets, stricter regulations, more pressure on efficiency. The Concept #2 feels like one of the first honest answers to that mismatch.
But there’s a catch. Will people still want a small car?
The production version of the smart #2 will debut in Paris in October 2026. That moment matters. Because that’s where concept meets reality. Where design becomes pricing. Where ambition meets the European buyer.
