The driver McLaren let go has beaten the driver Audi just signed
Ugo Ugochukwu clinched the 2026 FIA Formula 3 championship with second place in Sunday's feature race at the Madring, the new Madrid circuit that hosts the Spanish Grand Prix. The 19-year-old from New York finished the season on 159 points, 14 clear of Freddie Slater, the reigning Formula Regional European champion whom Audi named in January as the first member of its Formula 1 driver programme. Ten months ago McLaren had decided Ugochukwu was not worth keeping.
A 15-point deficit became a 14-point title in one Madring weekend
Slater arrived in Madrid 15 points ahead and with the better record: six feature-race podiums in the first seven rounds to Ugochukwu's five, plus a win in Hungary. The Madrid round ran three races instead of two, to replace the Bahrain event lost when the Iran war rewrote the F1 calendar, so an extra feature race was in play. Slater qualified 17th for the sprint and eighth for the feature races, retired from the first feature and finished eighth in the second. Ugochukwu qualified fourth and second, finished eighth, fourth and second, and scored 33 points to Slater's four. Tuukka Taponen, a Ferrari junior, won the final race and took third in the standings on 109.
McLaren signed him at 13, then cut him after a 43-point season with Prema
McLaren signed Ugochukwu in March 2021, at 13, the age at which it had signed Lewis Hamilton, after he won the European OK-Junior karting title with Sauber's kart team. He delivered two titles in McLaren colours: the inaugural Euro 4 championship in 2023 and the 2024 Macau Grand Prix, the first American win there since Bob Earl in 1981. His first Formula 3 season, with Prema in 2025, produced 43 points, 16th place and no wins, and in November McLaren released him along with Martinius Stenshorne and Brando Badoer, promoting Matteo De Palo instead. De Palo, Slater's team-mate at Trident, finished this season 24th with seven points.
Freddie Slater was Audi's first junior signing, and Taponen is Ferrari's
Audi announced Slater on 26 January as the first driver in its Driver Development Programme, the scheme run by Allan McNish that replaced the Sauber Academy for 2026. The 18-year-old Briton had won Italian F4, UAE F4 and the 2025 Formula Regional European title in successive seasons, and was the obvious pick. Taponen, third, carries Ferrari's badge. The champion is the only driver in the top three with no Formula 1 team behind him, and he got there in an all-new Campos line-up alongside Théophile Naël and Red Bull junior Ernesto Rivera.
Campos took its first drivers' title and ended Trident's three-year run
Trident had won the last three F3 drivers' championships, with Gabriel Bortoleto, Leonardo Fornaroli and Rafael Câmara. Campos Racing, the Spanish team founded by the late Adrián Campos, had never won the drivers' title before this weekend, and it added it to a second consecutive teams' championship, secured on Saturday, on home ground. Ugochukwu won twice this year, the Melbourne feature race and the Silverstone sprint, to Slater's single win. Slater stood on the podium eight times to the champion's seven and lost the title on the weekends he scored nothing.
The title is worth 30 super licence points, and Alpine has already run him
An F3 title carries 30 of the 40 points needed for an F1 super licence, and with the 12 he collected for third place in the 2025 Formula Regional Middle East series, Ugochukwu clears the threshold. He also has a Formula 1 day in the bank. In June, Alpine ran him in its 2024 car, the A524, in a private test at Monza alongside reserve driver Paul Aron: the first F1 mileage of his career, and not with the team that raised him. The rules bar a champion from returning to F3, so 2027 means Formula 2.

Audi already employs the answer to this weekend. Gabriel Bortoleto won this same title in 2023 with no F1 programme behind him, McLaren signed him five weeks later, and he now drives Audi's race car. Junior programmes pay for last season's scoreboard, which is why Audi bought the FRECA champion in January and McLaren sold the 16th-placed driver in November. The scoreboard that mattered was the next one, and on that one the driver nobody wanted scored 159 points against seven for the driver McLaren chose instead.
Bortoleto's clock ran five weeks from Monza to a McLaren contract. Ugochukwu's starts now, with a super licence already in hand and an Alpine test behind him. The 2027 Formula 2 grid firms up around the Abu Dhabi post-season test in December. If no F1 team has attached its name to him by then, the driver market will have decided that McLaren read him right and the championship read him wrong, and that would be the stranger verdict of the two.
