In 1948 Ferry Porsche could not find the sports car he wanted, so he built it. The 356 was light, rear-engined and unexpectedly quick, and it set the template for everything that followed. In 1963 his son Ferdinand Alexander drew the 911, and Porsche has spent six decades refusing to replace it.

Racing is not a marketing department at Porsche, it is the point. Nineteen overall wins at Le Mans, the 917, the 956 and the 919 Hybrid all fed directly into road cars that could be driven to the shops on Monday. The Boxster, Cayenne and Macan then proved that the same engineering could pay for the 911's future.

Today Porsche runs the 911 alongside the electric Taycan and Macan Electric, hybrid Panameras and Cayennes, and the 718 sports cars, with GT models built for people who still measure life in lap times. Every one of them is engineered so that the drive home is the best part of the day.
