Renault does not really do flagships anymore, which is exactly why the Rafale is such a pleasant surprise. It is a big coupe-SUV with genuine presence, a beautifully finished cabin and, in the 300hp four-wheel-drive E-Tech form, finally a drivetrain with the pace and ambition to match the looks. It is not chasing the BMW X4 around a track, and it is all the better for it, leaning into comfort, design and a sense of occasion instead. If you want a large family car that feels special without stepping up to German premium prices, the Rafale deserves a serious look.
