A wheel is held on by friction, not by hooking onto anything. In the first fifty kilometres that joint beds in and the clamp load drops slightly, which is why every fitter tells you to come back. Do it yourself after a change on your own driveway, keep the threads clean and dry, and know that after a professional change a German appeal court has already ruled the garage cannot hand its own quality control to you on a sticker.

The size is the easy part. The number and letter after it, 91V on a 205/55 R16, are approval values your car was type-approved on, and a cheaper tyre in the same size is very often cheaper because one of them is lower. Find the minimum in your vehicle documents, never in the tyre already fitted, and treat the load index as a floor that no winter exception ever lowers.

Stop-start is a permission, not a switch. The engine only shuts down when temperature, cabin demand, steering angle and above all battery state of charge allow it, so a system that quietly stops working is the earliest warning you get that the battery is fading. Expect five to seven percent in city traffic and close to nothing on a motorway run.

A foreign camera identifies nobody. It reads a plate, and your own national vehicle register supplies the name and address, under a European directive that also decides which offences qualify and what language the letter is written in. Collecting the money is a separate law with a 70-euro floor.

Buy a used car from a trader anywhere in the EU and a two-year legal guarantee comes with it, whatever the window sticker says. It can be shortened to one year in some countries, never below that, and for the first twelve months the seller has to prove the fault was not there at handover. A blanket sold-as-seen line does not remove any of it.

A modern engine is allowed to use oil, and most drivers never find out how much. Volkswagen and Audi permit up to 0.5 litres per 1,000 km, the span between MIN and MAX is only about one litre, and no warning light appears until you are already at the bottom of it. Check it warm, on level ground, five minutes after switching off.

Wet grip does not fade, it falls off a cliff. On a soaked test track the same car stopped from 80 km/h in 25.8 metres on new tyres and 36.2 metres on tyres at the 1.6 mm legal minimum. From 120 km/h that gap grew from ten metres to ninety-six. Replace summer tyres at 3 mm, and check yours with a one-euro coin.

The black clamp belongs on bare metal, not on the battery. The old reason was hydrogen gas at the one connection that always sparks. The modern reason is a sensor clamped around the negative cable that counts every amp and never sees the ones you feed past it. Find your car's marked jump points before the morning you need them.

Spain banned the warning triangle on 1 January 2026 and replaced it with a connected V16 beacon you switch on without leaving your seat. The reason is the DGT's own five-year average of 22 people a year killed after getting out of their vehicle. Germany, France, Italy and Belgium still require the triangle, so the habit that travels well is the same everywhere: hazards on, vest on before you open the door, everyone out of the passenger side and behind the barrier.
