Idling to warm up or to defrost is an offence in most of Europe. Germany charges 80 euros under section 30 of the StVO, France 135, Italy between 223 and 444, and your own driveway is not the loophole people assume it is. ADAC measured engine oil at minus 7 degrees after four full minutes of idling at minus 10. Scrape the glass properly, start, and drive away gently instead.

The lens in front of your bulb is a wear part. As its factory coating dies the plastic underneath clouds, the sharp cut-off of your dipped beam goes soft, and the light you lose reappears as glare for oncoming traffic. Inspectors across Europe treat it as a defect rather than a blemish. Park five metres from a wall at dusk and compare left with right.

The eye is not permission to tow. It is a recovery point, and on almost every electric car and plenty of modern automatics, dragging the car on its own wheels damages the drivetrain. Belgium caps towing at 25 km/h and bans it on the motorway, Germany allows a rope only as far as the next exit. Fit the eye, then call the flatbed.

Low sun does not blind you. Your windscreen does. Interior trim outgasses a haze onto the inside of the glass, and at a low sun angle that haze scatters into a white wall. Clean the inside of the screen, drive in category 3 lenses and never category 4, and switch on dipped beam so the traffic behind you can still see a car.

A rear fog lamp is a fog light, not a bad weather light. European type approval sets it at 150 to 300 candela against a maximum of 17 for the tail lamp beside it, and every country then wrote its own rule for the switch: 50 metres of visibility in Germany and the Netherlands, 100 metres in Belgium, and no rain at all in France.

A lifetime fill is a statement about the car's design life, not about the oil. ZF recommends changing the oil and filter in its eight-speed automatic at roughly 80,000 to 120,000 km or eight years, while carmakers fitting the identical gearbox often print no interval at all. If your handbook is silent, treat the supplier's figure as the real one.

The blind spot beside your car is mostly a setting. Door mirrors aimed to include your own rear wing duplicate what the interior mirror already shows and leave the lane alongside you uncovered. Swinging both of them outward until your own car disappears turns the three views into a relay, and it takes about thirty seconds.

Not every electric car wants the same charge limit. LFP packs, now standard in Europe's cheapest EVs, are meant to be charged to 100 percent and need a weekly full charge to keep their range estimate honest, while nickel-based packs still prefer 80 percent for daily use. The charge screen tells you which one you have.

In an emergency, more than nine out of ten drivers press the brake firmly and still stop well short of what the car can do. Brake assist and ABS exist to close that gap, and both want the same thing from you: a fast, hard stab that stays pinned to the floor while the pedal shakes.
