BMW iX4 costs €5,000 more than the iX3 yet goes further
A sloping roof normally costs range, and on the iX4 it adds kilometres
BMW presents the iX4, the third Neue Klasse model after the iX3 and the new i3, and the first with a coupé roofline. It goes on sale in March 2027, from €70,900 in Germany. On paper it should be the compromise version of the iX3. With the same battery and the same motors, it covers more ground on a charge instead.
BMW iX4 50 xDrive reaches 828 km for €75,900, against 805 km in the iX3
The BMW iX4 50 xDrive costs €75,900 in Germany, €5,000 more than an iX3 50 xDrive, and its WLTP range rises from 805 to 828 km. Everything that matters underneath is shared: a 108.7 kWh usable battery, 469 hp and 645 Nm from a motor on each axle, 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and 400 kW DC charging, good for 387 km in ten minutes. The gap repeats at the top of the range, where the iX4 M60 is rated at 777 km against 754 km for the iX3 M60. BMW has not published a drag coefficient yet, so the lower roof is the likeliest explanation rather than a confirmed one.
BMW iX4 40 xDrive starts at €70,900 with 374 hp and 83 kWh
The entry-level iX4 40 xDrive costs €70,900, exactly what BMW Germany asks for the iX3 50 xDrive. For that money the coupé buyer gets 374 hp, 520 Nm, an 83 kWh battery, 638 km of WLTP range and 300 kW charging, while the iX3 50 buyer gets 469 hp and 805 km. Part of the difference is equipment: every iX4 carries the M Sport package with 20-inch M wheels and blue M Sport brakes as standard, plus a panoramic glass roof. The 0 to 100 km/h sprint takes 5.6 seconds.
BMW iX4 M60 xDrive: 612 hp and 777 km, on order from January 2027
The BMW iX4 M60 xDrive can be ordered from January 2027, shortly after the two launch versions, and tops the range. Its two motors produce 612 hp and 875 Nm, enough for 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and an electronically limited 240 km/h. Adaptive M suspension is standard, and the M60 is the only iX4 with an electronically controlled M locking differential at the rear axle. Outside it wears M Yellow Lights, an M rear spoiler, 21-inch wheels and black kidney trim; inside come Harman Kardon sound and ten-way electric M Sport seats. BMW has not given its price.
Debrecen builds the BMW iX4 next to the iX3, on 24-hour shifts
BMW builds the iX4 at its plant in Debrecen, Hungary, the factory that launched the Neue Klasse with the iX3 and already runs around the clock. In September BMW moved Debrecen to 24-hour shifts to work through a backlog of 50,000 iX3 orders, so the coupé arrives on a line that is already full. Unless BMW raises output further, every iX4 built means an iX3 customer waits a little longer. The iX3 itself was named World Car of the Year in April, so the factory is not short of demand.
AutoNext Take
The iX4 turns BMW's coupé from the style option into the range option. With the same 108.7 kWh battery and the same motors as the iX3, the lower body buys 23 km in the 50 xDrive and another 23 km in the M60, for a €5,000 premium that also covers standard M Sport kit. Buyers of a coupé SUV usually pay extra for the look alone; here they get more reach as well. Rear headroom and boot space, which BMW has not published yet, are where the roofline will send its bill.
Germany's 2027 registration figures will show whether buyers believe it. With deliveries from March and the M60 on order from January, the iX4 can reach at least one in four Neue Klasse SUV registrations in Germany by the end of 2027, a share that would make it the coupé that pays its way rather than a niche beside the iX3. Debrecen's capacity, not demand, is the likeliest thing to hold it back.
