Chery wants the German feeling, and is learning it on British roads
Chery's first year in Britain sold 29,000 cars and one admission
Chery's own-badge cars have been on sale in the United Kingdom for twelve months, 29,000 have been registered, and the 2026 target is already beaten. Country manager Farrell Hsu marked the anniversary in London by promising four new or updated SUVs for 2027, and by saying something Chinese carmakers rarely say out loud: buyers like cars that drive like German ones, and that is something Chery still has to learn.
Chery, Omoda and Jaecoo took nearly 8 percent of the UK market in July
Chery's three British brands held close to 8 percent of UK registrations in July, up from 3 percent a year earlier, on SMMT figures. The Chery badge alone passed 29,000 cars in its first year, and sister brand Jaecoo's 7 SUV has found nearly 53,000 buyers since late 2024, topping the UK sales chart outright in March. July registration data ranked the Chery group the eleventh-largest carmaker in Europe, with sales up 201.7 percent inside a Chinese share of 10.7 percent. The group is also studying whether to build Omoda and Jaecoo cars at Nissan's Sunderland plant to get inside the tariff wall.
The Tiggo X flagship is a 5.05-metre, 476 hp plug-in hybrid with seven seats
The headline addition is the Tiggo X, the boxy seven-seater Chery revealed at the Beijing show in April, though Hsu says the European name is not final. The Chinese car is 5,050 mm long on a 2,950 mm wheelbase, combines a 1.5- or 2.0-litre turbo engine with electric drive for 476 hp and 630 Nm, and claims around 200 km of electric range on China's CLTC cycle with more than 1,500 km combined. The number Chery did not bring to London is that its current flagship, the Tiggo 9 C-DM, sold 84 cars in China in March 2026, on China EV DataTracker figures reported by CarNewsChina. Large Tiggos have to work in Europe because they have stopped working at home.
Millbrook's 70 km of test track opens in late autumn to retune steering and dampers
Chery's answer to the German question is a research and development centre at the UTAC Millbrook proving ground in Bedfordshire, opening in late autumn 2026 with more than 70 km of test track. Hsu calls its first job a translation centre, turning British feedback into parameters Chinese engineers can change: steering, damping, driver assistance. Chery's chief engineer Peter Matkin, who spent 15 years at Jaguar Land Rover, puts the problem down to geography: Chinese roads are new, straight and flat, so his engineers have never had to tune a car for an unlit, twisting road at 100 km/h. By his own split, 60 percent of a European-bound Chery is carried over, 30 percent is adapted for regulations and 10 percent is engineered in Europe. The first cars tuned that way arrive with the 2027 rollout.
Plug-in hybrids are three quarters of Chery's UK sales, and supply set the ceiling
Roughly three quarters of the Chery-badged cars sold in Britain are Super Hybrid plug-ins, and Hsu says demand ran ahead of what the factories could ship. Batteries run from the Tiggo 4's 1.8 kWh full hybrid to 18.4 and 34.4 kWh plug-in packs, and Hsu wants buyers to choose only the battery size. The first Chery-badged electric car reaches the UK in 2027. Germany has been told not to expect one before the end of that year, although the Tiggo 3 EV that opens a new electric line is due on the Paris show stand in October.
Germany gets the Chery badge in the first half of 2027, from about €22,000
The brand that wants to feel German arrives in Germany in the first half of 2027, with hybrids only: a Tiggo 4 full hybrid targeted at €22,000 to €25,000, a Tiggo 7 around €30,000 with the plug-in roughly €4,000 dearer, a seven-seat Tiggo 8 just under €40,000 and an all-wheel-drive Tiggo 9 plug-in at the top. Chery plans 30 dealers by spring and at least 100 by the end of 2027, a seven-year warranty and three years of free servicing. Belgium gets the same Tiggo range at the end of 2026, a fifth brand called Lepas is already shipping to Italy and Spain, and the Barcelona plant shared with Ebro is aiming for 200,000 cars a year.

Chery has just said in public what European road tests of the Tiggo have been saying politely for a year: the cars were signed off for roads that do not bend. That candour is also a confession about sequence. Matkin's own split puts 10 percent of a European Chery's engineering in Europe, and that 10 percent is the part the reviews are about. The 29,000 British buyers of year one got the version tuned before Millbrook existed.
Germany decides this, and Chery has scheduled its arrival before the homework is marked. Dealers open in spring 2027, and a Munich buyer will be asked around €30,000 for a Tiggo 7 whose steering was recalibrated on Bedfordshire roundabouts. If the first German comparison tests in mid-2027 put the Tiggo 7 within reach of a Tiguan on ride and steering, the 10 percent was enough. If they read like the British ones of 2026, Chery will be selling Germans a German feeling it learned second-hand.
