Tips & Guides

Your headlight aim is measured from the car's body, and the body tips on its springs. A loaded boot or a trailer lifts the nose and swings the dipped beam up into oncoming drivers' eyes, which is exactly what the numbered dial beside your light switch is for. Higher number, lower beam, and it needs turning back when you unload.

A keyless car key holds two separate things: a battery-powered radio for locking and hands-free entry, and a passive chip that the car itself powers. The chip is what authorises the start, so a flat key battery does not stop you driving away. What you need to know in advance is where your car reads that chip, and that opening the door with the emergency blade will set the alarm off.

Most punctures in the middle of the tread are repairable, and a proper repair costs a fraction of a new tyre. Use the sealant bottle your car came with instead of a spare wheel and that option disappears, because after sealant a professional repair is no longer permitted. The other way drivers destroy a repairable tyre is by pulling the nail out at the roadside.

A factory reset clears the contacts, the profiles and the saved home address, and leaves the account that can still unlock the car completely untouched. That account sits in the manufacturer's cloud against the VIN, alongside digital keys, invited drivers and a garage code the screen never sees. Here is the order to do it in, and what a buyer should check on the day.

German insurers start paying for storm damage at wind force 8, Dutch insurers at 7, and your own policy may name no figure at all. Third-party cover pays nothing either way. And the line between water damage that is paid and water damage that is refused is simply whether the water came to your car, or your car went to the water.

Nearly half of all breakdowns in Europe come down to the 12-volt battery, and modern cars deliberately keep it around 80 percent charged to save fuel. Short trips never make that back, summer hides the deficit and the first cold morning exposes it. A ten euro multimeter and one overnight charge a month is the whole fix.

European guidance does not judge your dashcam by the country you are driving in, but by how long its recording loop is. A camera that films continuously is the version regulators object to; one that overwrites itself and saves only on impact is the version they accept. Austria, Luxembourg and Portugal are the exceptions, and the upload is where almost everyone else goes wrong.

Damage repaired without an insurer leaves no trace in any European register, but it leaves paint. Factory finishes measure about 80 to 150 microns and stay consistent across the car; a refinished panel reads 200 to 300 or more. Take three to five readings per panel, and buy the dual Fe/NFe gauge, because a magnetic-only one reads nothing on aluminium.

European competition law forbids a carmaker from making its warranty conditional on servicing inside its own dealer network. Regulation 461/2010 runs to May 2028 and says so plainly, yet claims still get refused. What actually decides them is the invoice: the schedule followed, the oil specification named, the parts identified, and a record the next owner can read.
