Rainer Zietlow drove a stock ID. Buzz through 92 countries in 445 days for a Guinness World Record, but the figure worth keeping is TÜV Nord's: 95.75 percent battery health after more than 300 charging stops on six continents.

One ID. Buzz, 92 countries and a 95.75 percent battery certificate

Rainer Zietlow left the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles customer centre in Hanover on 1 July 2025 in a series-production ID. Buzz and drove back into it 445 days later with 99,767 km on the odometer and 92 countries behind him. Guinness World Records handed over the certificate at IAA Transportation this week. The document that matters more came from TÜV Nord: the 86 kWh battery is at 95.75 percent state of health.

The 92-country route: 445 days, 16 container ships and 300 charging stops

The van was a standard long-wheelbase ID. Buzz Pro with the 86 kWh battery, 200 kW peak charging and stock Giti tyres, in what Volkswagen calls series-production condition. Guinness counts the trip as continuous even though the van crossed water in a container 16 times, and Zietlow averaged about 224 km a day across six continents, through deserts, mountain passes and cities, with more than 300 charging stops and, by his account, no technical failure. The previous benchmark for this kind of drive was set by a Dutchman: Wiebe Wakker's three-year Netherlands-to-Sydney run in a converted Golf estate covered 33 countries.

TÜV Nord's 95.75 percent is 4.25 points used of a 30-point warranty allowance

TÜV Nord read the state of health through the van's onboard diagnostics, verified its identity and confirmed every critical drivetrain component was original. A 4.25 percent loss on an 86 kWh usable pack is about 3.7 kWh, or roughly 20 km of range at the ID. Buzz's WLTP consumption of 18.7 kWh per 100 km. Volkswagen's battery warranty runs eight years or 160,000 km and only pays out below 70 percent, so this van used 4.25 of its 30 allowed points in 99,767 km. Fleet-telematics data from Geotab puts the average EV at 1.8 percent loss a year; this one lost 3.5 points in fourteen and a half months, but did five to six times the mileage of a typical car in that time.

Zietlow charged at grid substations in Zambia and rated Saudi Arabia close to Germany

The charging map is the most useful thing Zietlow brought back. In Zambia and Tanzania there was no public charging at all, so he plugged into national grid substations under supervision. South Africa, Morocco and Rwanda already work well, Saudi Arabia has gone from almost nothing three years ago to nearly German coverage, and China sits in a league of its own. His case for doing the trip electric is a maintenance one: no oil changes, no overheating and no exposure to the high-sulphur or water-contaminated diesel that stops combustion cars in parts of Africa and Asia.

The same MEB battery was recalled on 94,031 cars in March

Volkswagen recalled 74,579 ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo vehicles in March, plus 19,452 Cupra Borns, because individual modules inside the high-voltage battery may not meet specification, with reduced range or fire as the possible outcomes. The affected Volkswagens were built between 24 June 2023 and 23 August 2024 and go in for inspection, software and, where needed, module replacement. The record van passed TÜV Nord's inspection with its modules in original condition, which is exactly why Volkswagen wanted a certificate rather than a country count: one clean pack does not clear a platform, but it is the best evidence a customer can be shown.

Zietlow's 2021 ID.4 covered 56,327 km in 97 days, so the Buzz went slower and further

This is Zietlow's second Guinness record in an electric Volkswagen. In 2021 he and Derek Collins drove an ID.4 through all 48 contiguous US states, 56,327 km in 97 days and 628 dealerships, for the longest continuous electric journey in one country. That was a 580 km-a-day sprint on one country's charging network; the Buzz averaged less than half that across 92 of them, which is the harder test of a battery. It is also a different kind of record from the Skoda Peaq's 936 km on one charge, which was set at under 40 km/h on a closed loop. The Buzz's mileage was done at road speed, on whatever charger the next town had.

AutoNext Take

The Guinness certificate is the less valuable of the two documents this van brought back to Hanover. Ninety-two countries measures visa desks and shipping schedules as much as a drivetrain, and 16 container legs sit inside Guinness's definition of continuous. The TÜV Nord reading answers the question buyers actually type: 95.75 percent after 99,767 km, 300 charging stops on chargers ranging from Chinese to non-existent, and a platform that recalled 94,031 cars for battery modules six months earlier.

Volkswagen warrants that pack to 70 percent at 160,000 km, a floor this van would not reach before roughly 700,000 km on a straight-line reading of its own certificate. Toyota already writes ten years and one million kilometres on its battery paper. Volkswagen will leave its eight-year, 160,000 km, 70 percent terms untouched on every MEB car through the end of 2027 all the same, because a warranty is priced on the worst pack in the fleet, and March named 94,031 candidates for that title.
