A modern Maserati covered in clues to where the whole story began

Maserati has marked its centenary with a single, deeply personal car. The MCPura Cielo Tributo 1926 is a one-off Fuoriserie creation honouring 1926, the year the Trident was born, and it was handed to its owner in Modena on the very day the 2026 Mille Miglia rolled through the city. The timing and the place could hardly be more fitting.

The year that explains the name

The 1926 in the name is the key to everything. That year, Alfieri Maserati raced the Tipo 26 at the Targa Florio, the first car ever to wear the Trident badge. The emblem itself, created by Mario Maserati and inspired by the Fountain of Neptune in Bologna, turns 100 this year. So this is not a tribute to a model, it is a tribute to the very beginning of Maserati as a marque, distilled into a modern car.

Details for those who know

The car is finished in Grigio Lamiera Matte and wears a custom racing livery in Rosso Capannelle, Blu Infinito and Bianco Pastello. A faithful reproduction of the original Tipo 26 badge sits on the bonnet, and the historic Trident appears in several interpretations across the car. It rides on 20-inch Cyclonic diamond-cut wheels with red accents, and the door badges carry the signatures of Alfieri Maserati and the legendary works mechanic Guerino Bertocchi. It is the kind of car that rewards close inspection.

Inside the Cielo

The MCPura Cielo is the open-top version of Maserati's mid-engined flagship, powered by the brand's Nettuno V6, and this example is trimmed to match its exterior theme. The cabin features heated seats with Trident stitching on the headrests, a full carbon fibre package, a Sonus faber 12-speaker audio system, a driver assistance pack and a front axle lift. It is a proper modern supercar dressed in a century of history.

AutoNext Take

Handing this car over in Modena, on Mille Miglia day, in the city where Maserati was effectively born, is the sort of detail that no amount of marketing budget can fake. The Tributo 1926 works because every element points back to a real moment in history rather than a vague notion of heritage. For a brand currently fighting to secure its future, it is a timely reminder of just how deep its roots run. A century of the Trident deserves a car this thoughtful, and this one delivers.

Three of the cars use GMA's naturally aspirated V12.

Xiaomi sent its 1,003 hp SUV around the Nurburgring with no one inside

Xiaomi's YU7 GT, a 1,003 hp electric SUV, has completed what is claimed to be the world's first fully autonomous lap of the Nurburgring Nordschleife. With no driver on board, the car's software navigated the entire 20.8 km circuit in 10 minutes and 29.483 seconds. The lap is far slower than a human would manage in the same car, but the point was the achievement itself: a self-driving system handling the world's hardest track.

A Defender built on a Jeep platform? JLR and Stellantis are talking

Jaguar Land Rover and Stellantis have signed a non-binding memorandum to explore building future Defender models on Stellantis platforms in the United States, potentially sharing architecture with Jeep. The plan would let JLR sidestep US import tariffs and grow in North America, its biggest market, while the company also pivots away from China. Both an SUV and a pickup are reportedly under consideration.

The EU is now going after Chinese plug-in hybrids, not just EVs

The European Commission is preparing countervailing duties on Chinese plug-in hybrids, according to Handelsblatt, extending the trade barriers it already applies to Chinese electric cars. Brands including BYD, Chery and SAIC are in scope. PHEVs currently face only the standard 10 percent import tariff, a gap Chinese makers exploited so successfully that BYD became Germany's best-selling plug-in hybrid brand in May 2026.

McLaren is knocking A$100,000 off the Artura, and it says a lot

McLaren is offering up to A$100,000, around €60,000, off selected Artura models in an Australian end-of-financial-year deal. The discount applies to existing stock of the twin-turbo V6 plug-in hybrid supercar, which makes close to 700 hp. Six-figure discounts on a McLaren are rare, and the move reflects a tougher market in which even exclusive performance brands are competing harder for buyers.

A manual Maserati supercar is coming, with Alfa Romeo's help

Maserati's Bottegafuoriserie bespoke division is developing a limited-production front-engined GT powered by the Nettuno V6, fitted with a manual gearbox and built in collaboration with Alfa Romeo. The project has been confirmed by Cristiano Fiorio, who oversees Bottegafuoriserie, and engineering chief Davide Danesin, who said the manual transmission suits the mechanical and classical character the car is meant to embody. Production will be strictly limited, and it represents Maserati's most pointed statement yet that driver engagement, not electrification, is at the heart of what the brand wants to stand for.

Porsche wants to make money with fewer cars, and 1,900 jobs will go

Porsche CEO Michael Leiters is pushing to finalise a second cost-cutting package before the factory holidays in July. The plan involves cutting 1,900 jobs over the coming years, on top of 2,000 temporary workers let go last year, and running production below the roughly 280,000 cars Porsche sold previously. Squeezed by tariffs and weak demand in China, Leiters says Porsche must "make money with fewer cars."

Aston Martin will deliberately build fewer cars, and keep the V12 alive

Aston Martin CEO Adrian Hallmark has confirmed a major strategic shift: rather than chasing 10,000 annual sales, the brand will deliberately cap production at 6,500 to 7,000 cars a year to protect its exclusivity, cutting overhead by around 30 percent. One of its three front-engined GT models will be dropped, the remaining cars gain more variants, the twin-turbo V12 is safe until at least 2035, and plug-in hybrid development has been shelved.

A GT40 reborn with 789 hp and, yes, the option of a manual

South Africa's Cape Advanced Vehicles, a GT40 specialist since 1999, has revealed the GT MkII, a spiritual successor to the Ford GT40 rather than a straight replica. It pairs a twin-supercharged 4.2-litre Audi V8 making 789 hp with all-wheel drive, an R8-derived platform and the choice of an automated, dual-clutch or full manual gearbox. It hits 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds and tops 328 km/h. Just 40 will be built as a 60th Anniversary Edition.

Ferrari has patented a gated manual shifter that controls an automatic gearbox

A newly surfaced Ferrari patent describes an electronic H-pattern shifter, a gated lever like the brand's classic open-gate manuals, that controls a modern automatic transmission by wire. There is no mechanical linkage: moving the lever sends an electronic signal to select gears. It is a patent rather than a confirmed product, but it points to Ferrari trying to recreate the feel of a manual without giving up the modern automatic.
