Porsche's new Burmester stereo hides a chip with bigger ambitions

Porsche has built the first production-ready high-end car audio system using gallium nitride (GaN), debuting in the 2027 Burmester 3D system. The chip runs cooler and lighter than silicon, and Porsche is already studying it for the high-voltage power electronics in its future electric sports cars.

Russell wins a quiet Zandvoort sprint as the rain arrives one lap too late

George Russell won the Dutch Grand Prix sprint at Zandvoort from lights to flag, leading every lap to beat Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris in a largely processional race. Rain that threatened the closing laps arrived only after the flag, sparing Russell a nervous finish. Max Verstappen could only manage sixth at his home race, days after signing a new Red Bull deal to 2030, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli took fourth with a floor-damaged car.

Did you know the legend behind Jeep's seven-slot grille is a myth?

Jeep's seven-slot grille is one of the most recognisable faces in motoring, and the myth says the seven slots stand for the seven continents. The real reason is more practical: the wartime Jeep had a nine-slot grille patented by Ford, so Willys removed two slots to differ from it and to fit larger civilian headlights. It debuted on the 1945 CJ-2A and is now a registered trademark.

The UK is about to tax electric cars by the mile, and the rest of Europe is watching

The UK will introduce a pay-per-mile tax on electric cars from April 2028, charging EVs 3p per mile and plug-in hybrids 1.5p, to plug a forecast 12 billion pound hole in fuel duty. Mileage will be logged via odometer readings and MOT checks. The fleet sector warns it could cost 260 million pounds a year and slow EV adoption.

Opel's cheapest car is now a family SUV, and it comes with a manual gearbox

The flush door handle just triggered China's biggest ever recall, with Tesla at the centre

China has launched its biggest ever coordinated recall, with around a dozen carmakers pulling back more than seven million vehicles over concerns about hidden door handles. Tesla accounts for nearly three million, across the Model 3, Y, S and X, from 25 September. The worry is that the electric handles can be hard to open after a crash, and China will ban the design from 2027.
