The spherical fuel tank on Porsche's lightest ever racing car saved just seven kilograms

The 1968 Porsche 909 Bergspyder is still the lightest racing car Porsche has ever built, at around 400 kilograms, and its spherical titanium fuel tank shows how far the obsession with weight went. The 0.8 mm titanium sphere used nitrogen pressure to feed the engine and delete the fuel lift pump, saving up to seven kilograms. Powered by a 275 hp flat-eight, the hillclimb special was a rolling laboratory whose lessons fed the 908/3 that won the 1970 World Sportscar Championship.

BYD's flash charging network hit 10,000 stations. A third of users drive rivals

BYD opened its 10,000th flash charging station in Shenzhen on 28 August, doubling the network in under five months. Nearly a third of the 1.83 million drivers who have used it plug in a car from another brand. Porsche will sell manual 911s until the law makes it stop, and it just proved it

Porsche has committed to keeping the manual gearbox for as long as it is legally allowed and customers want it. Porsche Cars North America CEO Timo Resch made the pledge at Monterey Car Week, days after a six-speed manual returned for the 2027 911 Carrera S, taking the manual 911 line-up to seven configurations. But regulation is closing in, and Porsche's own T-Hybrid tech is already incompatible with a manual, so the gearbox faces pressure from two directions at once.

Volvo's EX90 can finally do Dolby Atmos without leaving CarPlay

Volvo is rolling out spatial audio powered by Dolby Atmos inside Apple CarPlay on the EX90 and ES90, with the EX60 to follow once wireless CarPlay reaches it later in 2026. The feature needs the optional Bowers & Wilkins system, 25 speakers in the EX90, and it ends the trade-off that forced owners out of CarPlay to reach Atmos.
